2 Third-party Plug-ins, Scripts, and ExtensionsĪfter Effects was originally created by David Herbstman, David Simons, Daniel Wilk, David M.Nuke is great for comping but it's not the tool to create tags, lower thirds and other simple re-usable motion-graphics, AE can be used as an editor for short projects which is an advantage. There's no clear alternative to After Effects at the moment although I'm looking very closely to how fusion and resolve are coming along. We use Houdini for 3D animation and it's insane what kind of development happens inside a point release. I'm sure the developers mean well but it's hard to see even a percentile of that revenue back in development. Reading a json file into a variable, making the pen tool accessible through expressions (create points and in/out tangents) and the most trivial of scripts: creating nulls for each point in a path and linking positions. Adobe had a revenue of nearly $6bn in 2016, the top features on this new release feel trivial to me. Thanks for the reply Mylenium, It's hard to not fall into a rant, I honestly tried to be as positive as possible going into the new AE version but it's though. I understand why you automatically create a new shape if you draw them by hand using the built in tools but that's not a valid reason why you can't create multiple paths via expressions.

This would enable me to do exiting new things, now I just can't do that at all, I can't create 100 shapes and copy paste the same code in each one of them, that's just crazy. There are a lot of aspects to After Effects that have been the same for years which I would love to change, I just don't see it happening, being able to create multiple paths would enable me to create hundreds of animated shapes through some simple expressions.

It's cheap and easy to find people familiar with the software but very very hard to love. In production I want to be able to design an asset and then be able to distribute this to my team and very quickly re-use this in multiple projects. I've been using after effects for years in production and the lack of progress in development is tough to swallow. I see what it does, I'm just disappointed in the current implementation to be honest.

Do you guys know how to handle this in a smarter way? Thanks in advance! This just creates one of the paths instead of both, especially if I want to do (way) more than just the two it's a bit crazy to keep copy pasting and slightly editing the expressions to create the points/tangent arrays of course. I would like to be able to do something like this for a single shape:ĬreatePath(complexFunction(1), inTangents, outTangents, is_closed =true) ĬreatePath(complexFunction(2), inTangents, outTangents, is_closed =true) One thing that is really holding me back now, is the inability to create multiple shapes, currently I'm copy pasting large blocks of code to create multiple animated circles while 90% of the code for the circles is the same (specific problem I'm working on now). It works great, finally I've been able to make some tags and lower thirds a bit more re-usable. For the new AE CC I was very excited to see support for expressions driving shapes.
